Why Investigate the Spooky Noises That Haunt Your Car?

October is Car Care Month, and the team at Brookside “66” Service knows that when your car makes spooky noises, it can feel like something’s haunting your car! No matter how scary it is, it’s always the best practice to investigate those noises, as they can indicate that there may be something bigger going wrong with your vehicle.

More than likely, you already know what your car sounds like when it’s running without trouble. When it starts to make an odd noise out of nowhere it’s easy to hope for the best and continue to ignore it. But that’s the worst thing you could do! For example, if you hear high-pitched sound that continues on after your engine is turned off, you might have an issue with your radiator pressure cap. The rubber gasket attached to it may be worn, and may need replacing.

You might also hear a continuous ticking while your engine idles. If that’s the case, shut your engine off and wait around ten minutes for it to cool and for the oil to settle. After it’s cooled, you should check your oil levels. If you aren’t running low, you may need to take your car in and have a trustworthy auto mechanic inspect and adjust your valves. You Might also hear an odd high-pitched squealing while your engine is on that turns off when you shut your engine down. If that’s the case, you might have a belt that’s a bit off. You may need to readjust your belts, or have them replaced altogether.

There are some noises, however, that should always raise red flags and be dealt with immediately. For instance, if you hear a loud tapping or knocking sound come from the vicinity of your engine, you should immediately pull over and call for roadside service. It could need a simple fix like cleaning out the carbon buildup in your engine, but it could also indicate more difficult issues, like a loose bearing or a damaged piston.
