You Might also hear an odd high-pitched squealing while your engine is on that turns off when you shut your engine down. If that’s the case, you might have a belt that’s a bit off. You may need to readjust your belts, or have them replaced altogether.

For instance, if you hear a loud tapping or knocking sound come from the vicinity of your engine, you should immediately pull over and call for roadside service. It could need a simple fix like cleaning out the carbon buildup in your engine, but it could also indicate more difficult issues, like a loose bearing or a damaged piston.
