Need An Oil Change? Read This First!

Howdy there, friends! Don't hit the gas pedal just yet if you're in the Kansas City area and think it might be time for an oil change. Let's take a minute to chat about what an oil change is, why it's important, how to check your oil, and the signs that it might be time for one. We're a trustworthy team of auto mechanics at Brookside "66" Service, and we're here to help you keep your vehicle running smoothly.

What Happens When You Get An Oil Change

Most of us know what an oil change is, and if you’re an expert, feel free to skip on to the next section. However, if you stick around, you may also find a new way to explain it–whether that be to your kids or grandkids one day, a neighbor who seems to really need an oil change, or the like.

So, what is an oil change, you ask? It's when we swap out your old, dirty oil for fresh, clean oil. This helps to lubricate your engine and prevent damage over time. As oil becomes thick and gunky, it can make your engine work harder than it needs to, which can lead to expensive repairs. Getting regular oil changes is the easiest way to avoid this.

Why are oil changes so important? Well, fresh oil keeps your engine running smoothly, reduces wear and tear, and can even help boost your fuel economy. Neglecting to change your oil, on the other hand, can lead to a whole mess of problems down the road. Trust us, you don't want that.

When To Get An Oil Change…Usually

But how often do you need an oil change? The answer can vary depending on your vehicle and your driving habits. A good rule of thumb is to get an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. Some newer cars and synthetic oils may allow for longer intervals, though. Your owner's manual or favorite auto mechanic (us, for example) can give you a better idea of what's best for your vehicle.

But keep in mind—this is just a rule of thumb! If you’re hard on your vehicle, have some other things going on under the hood, or the like, you may need one sooner. Don’t wait to come into an auto shop because you’re not at your 3,000 mile mark yet–when somethings off, come in as soon as possible! Doing so will prevent you from needing costly repairs.

Signs Your Vehicle Needs An Oil Change Service

Now, how can you tell if your car needs an oil change? Some signs to look out for include a loud engine, knocking or ticking noises, hotter-than-usual temperatures, or a warning light on your dashboard. If you're unsure, you can always check your oil level yourself. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again. The oil level should be between the two markers on the dipstick. If it's low, it's time for an oil change.
