How To Take Care Of Your Windshield Wipers

When it comes to your windshield wipers, it's important to remember that they're not just a convenient accessory--they're an integral part of being able to see clearly on the road. Especially here in KC, with all the rain, ice, and snow headed our way, ensuring your windshield wipers work is as essential as ensuring your car has gas. Below, we list our top tips for taking care of your windshield wipers.

Replace Your Wipers Every Six Months (Or Sooner!)

How often should you replace your windshield wipers? The experts suggest replacing your windshield wipers every six months (twice a year). However, it's probably time for a new set if you notice the rubber is starting to crack or dry out.

If you notice that there is any cracking in the rubber, this usually means that it's time for a new set of wipers—they'll probably not last much longer than this anyway! Sometimes with our unpredictable Kansas City weather, there’s no time to waste waiting for someone else to replace your wipers. Most wipers will have directions on the backside of the package if anything more specific needs to be done. You can watch this video on YouTube for a visual tutorial:

To find the right wiper blades for your vehicle, come see us at Brookside “66” Service or check your car's manual. You can usually purchase windshield wipers in an auto parts store, online, or we can help you order the right set.

Keep Your Windshield Clean

Between wiper blade replacements, you should keep your windshield as clean as possible, including the wiper blades. Wiping away dirt and grime with a damp cloth will help prolong the life of your wipers by preventing them from getting clogged up with debris. Also, drying off excess water from your car's glass will prevent buildup on the wipers' rubber edges and increase visibility when it's raining or snowing outside.

Watch for Tree Branches & Notice Where You’re Parking

A branch or twig caught in your windshield wiper blades will tear them up quickly. The same goes for ice or snow lodged there over time, which will wear down your wiper blades until they're damaged beyond repair.
