An orange indicator light labeled CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON is very important, as it’s also known as the malfunction indicator light (MIL) in technical jargon. The importance and function of this light became more critical starting in 1996, when the second generation of onboard diagnostics, known as OBDII, became standard equipment on all makes and models of cars.

Car diagnostics done at Brookside "66" are always done by professionals.

The OBDII system is a rather important part of car use and car diagnostics. The main reason for its development has been to:

  • Help regulate car use – with the stiff regulations on the developments of cars which have to be compliant, the OBDII has been a factor in the regulation of car quality. In fact, most of the cars which are compliant with the system are generally fuel efficient.
  • It helps with the keeping of clean air – reference to the clean air act of 1970, and the adoption of the use of the second-generation diagnostic scan tool use in 1998 and the final formation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • It helps reduce the time and cost of repair – with the overall simplification of the use of the check engine light function and the eventual adoption of the same in the form of the MIL, the car engine fault can be seen by the driver in a flash.

The OBDII system is required by the EPA for tighter emissions control, and the OBDII has the ability to monitor a diverse range of engine-related functions and record critical information for car diagnostics. You can think of this information as your car’s electronic vital signs. OBDII information has proven to be so credible that it is now being used by some states as part of their emissions testing programs. The SERVICE ENGINE SOON or CHECK ENGINE LIGHT has several modes and can indicate a normally functioning system, a system that requires prompt attention, and a system that needs immediate attention.

If your car’s OBDII system is functioning properly, the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light should flash briefly when you turn your car’s ignition key to the on position. After the brief flash, the light should go out and remain off while you are driving.

A glowing CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light alerts you to problems in your car’s onboard car diagnostics system that should be diagnosed as soon as possible. There’s no reason to panic and in many cases, you won’t notice any difference in vehicle performance. But if ignored over time you may turn a minor problem into a major and costly problem.
